Cap 40-80 mm broad, convex to plano-convex, centrally depressed, dull, dry, felted, grayish brown becoming black where rubbed or in wet weather; flesh grayish white, bitter. Spore-bearing surface composed of narrowly conical spines up to 10 mm long, grayish brown. Stem 40-70 x 8-10 mm, cylindrical or with a flared apex, dry, glabrous, dark grayish brown but soon blackening overall. Spore Deposit brown. Edibility: unknown.
