Hybrid bears a name honoring Isabella Kauakea Aiona Abbott (1919-), prominent marine phycologist, Hawaiian ethnobotanist, retired Stanford and University of Hawai'i professor, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Bishop Museum.
Rare epiphyte known from 'ohi'a (Metrosideros polymorpha) trees in wet forests at about 1,200 m elevation in the Koke'e area on Kaua 'i and on the summit of Ka 'ala on O'ahu.
Adenophorus hymenophylloides x A. tamariscinus was found in association with both parent species in adjacent trees and may be recognized by characteristics that clearly display its intermediacy.
