Latin albus, whitish,+ viridis, green, allud-ing to the light green color of the frond as compared with closely related varieties.
Plants medium-sized, terrestrial. Fronds 45-60 cm long. Stipes 3-5 mm diam. at bases, about 1/3 the length of the fronds, straw-colored, glabrous except for brown, linear-triangular scales at bases. Blades 2-pinnate-pinnatisect to 3-pinnate-pinnatifid, ovate-lanceolate, thick-textured, distinct whitish to grayish green when living, rachises straw-colored; rachises and costae with raised ridges and scattered hairlike scales. Pinnae wide, often overlapping. Pinnules, basiscopic pinnules usually larger and often more dissected than acroscopic ones. Ultimate segments oblong to lanceolate, 3-5 mm wide, rounded, margins mostly coarsely crenate to pinnatifid, tips rounded or with short, dull teeth, margins curled up adaxially in living plants. Sari supramedial.

The extreme form of this variety blends gradually into var. glabra in and at the margins of its area of distribution.
Dryopteris glabra var. alboviridis differs from var. glabra by its light green color; its coarser cutting with usually larger, broader, ultimate segments with crenatedentate margins; and its thicker and more leathery texture.
