A miniature variety with fronds fully fertile when as small as 6 cm long. Fronds 6-25 cm long. Rhizomes slender, long-creeping, 1-3 mm diam. Stipes, rachises, and costae well covered with chainlike, acute-tipped, tan hairs. Blades 1-pinnate-pinnatifid to 3-pinnate.
Rare, found on West Maui, recently collected at an elevation of 1,700 m on Pu 'u Kukui, the Kapunakea Preserve, and reported from 'Eke by Hillebrand in 1888.
Hypolepis hawaiiensis var. mauiensis is a fully fertile miniature form of H. hawaiiensis with very slender rhizomes.
