Latin intermedius, intermediate; alluding to morphology intermediate between that of the parental species.
Intermediate between parent species. Stems partially arched, irregularly flat to triangular in cross section, width strongly varying with the cross-sectional outline, about 1-2.5 mm wide, primary aerial stems 70-150 percent length of branched portions. Branchlets varying from nearly upright, spreading, to more or less pendent. Synangia varying from 2-to 3-ranked. Spores malformed.
An infrequent, but sometimes locally common, plant found in mesic to wet forests, 500-850 m, on Kaua'i, O'ahu (particularly in the Wai'anae Mountains), Uina'i, and Maui
Psilotum complanatum x P. nudum may be recognized by its characteristics intermediate between those of its parent species.
