Evergreen tree, 10 m tall, crown irregular. Leaves bipinnate, alternate; petiole swollen at base; stipules present, pinnate, two at each petiole base, each arranged on either side of terminal and axillary buds; leaflets oblong, entire, apex and base rounded, topside dark green, underside light green, glabrous; petiole, rachis, and petiolule light green. Bark gray, fissured, scaly, moderately smooth; lenticels white, conspicuous on trunk and both old and young branches. Flowers bisexual, complete, zygomorphic, racemose, 5-merous, bracts in pairs at base of pedicels, synsepalous, calyx thick and fleshy, apopetalous, epigynous, ovary superior, stamens 10, carpels 1, stigmas 1 and globose; upper surface of calyx and corolla bright red with terminal petal variegated bright orange with bright red specks and streaks; calyx margin orangish yellow, lower surface and pedicel orangish yellow green; placentation marginal. Fruit type legume; immature fruit light green, fleshy, ribbed, glabrous, smooth thin skin; mature fruit dark brown to black, dry, less ribbed, smooth, moderately fissured; seeds 16 or more, white margins with brown specks, light brown at center.
