Common in open areas in the Canal Zone; perhaps once common also on BCI but possibly no longer occurring there. Flowers throughout the rainy season and into the early dry season. Southern United States through Central America to Bolivia and Brazil; West Indies; Australia and South Pacific Islands. In Panama, from tropical moist forest all along the Pacific slope and in Bocas del Toro, and from premontane wet forest in Panama (Perlas Islands).
