Perennial, +/- erect, 0.5-2 m tall; culms glabrous or nearly so, sometimes geniculate at lower nodes. Sheaths glabrous to short-pubescent, prominently veined; blades 5-20 cm long, 1-3.5 cm wide, the petioles distinct, Frequent in the forest. Flowering mostly in the early dry season. Spikelets disarticulate immediately below the spikelet and are possibly dispersed by attachment of the long-acuminate sterile lemma to passing animals.
